Google has been testing a limited run of a new feature that lets you send DMs to other users directly on YouTube , suggesting that the video streaming platform is inching closer to becoming more of a self-contained social media space for people who want to discuss their favorite videos. YouTube has done plenty to try and reinvent itself, whether in big ways or small, but this latest feature could be a way for it to more easily convince people to stay within the platform.

As it stands right now, sharing a video with friends boils down to pasting the video link in your communication app of choice. That could be Telegram, Discord , and any number of other options. What it doesn’t include is YouTube . However, YouTube wants to change that, likely to keep people on YouTube to watch more videos and engage with more content. As there would be no need to leave YouTube to share a video.

YouTube is only testing DMs in Poland and Ireland

Over on the official YouTube support page , the YouTube team confirms that testing is underway, but only in two regions at the moment. For now, the test is starting small and is available to select users in Poland and Ireland only.

For those not included in the test, YouTube will no doubt expand this feature to other regions, but it may be a while before that happens. Considering the end of the year is only a month and a half away, expect any expansion of YouTube DMs testing to be in 2026.

While the YouTube team doesn’t really share any specific details about the features that DMs on its platform might have, it does explain a little about the use policy surrounding the messaging. It says that messages may be reviewed to scan for content that would break its policy guidelines on the YouTube platform. For example, content that would cause real-world harm. Those concerned about privacy likely aren’t going to be fond of this part of the policy. But it is understandable why YouTube is doing it this way.
